What Chevy El Camino is the best model?

Do you have any experience with El Caminos? If so.. what? What year is known to be the best year for this car? Personally I like anything made after '69. I want to buy an El Camino soon, but I am not sure what to look for and how much I should pay on average. It seems like their prices range from $3000 - $12,000 for one in good running condition. Fill me in! Thanks!
